A precursor system that increases safety in dispensing drugs

Granada has become, with its unique drug delivery system, in a province leading medical technological advances. Andalusia has patented a new intelligent system that, under the trade name iPharma, dispense medicines and consumables in hospitals in Granada. Later, it will spread to the rest of Andalusian centers before it’s marketed in the international market, which will encourage the promotion of the brand ‘Granada Health’.

This precursor model of drug dispensing and control increases safety, in addition to minimizing errors, in the administration of the dose for each patient. This system will work for both patients admitted to hospitals and for those who will pick them up.

The Counsellor of Health, Aquilino Alonso, described this new system as “pioneering and important” and said it was carried out due to the collaboration of research teams at San Cecilio hospital – the place in which the system has started operating – the UGR, the Institute of Health Research and Andalusian spin off Naranjo Intelligent Solutions.

iPharma is composed of electronic devices placed in the medication boxes of patients. With the prescription, the mechanism identifies both the drug and the patient that should receive it. The technician, meanwhile, gets an audio order that will indicate the dose, which will be recorded electronically.

Alonso said that the intention is to extend the system internationally, since “it represents a much lower investment than similar mechanisms currently on the market.”
